Welcome

Dear Doolen Middle School Community,

I am honored to introduce myself as the new Interim Principal of Doolen Middle School and to tell you that I am so excited to join this amazing school community. I can assure you that I share in Doolen’s community’s commitment of caring while providing your students with an enriching learning environment.

I arrive in Doolen first as a mom and a wife. My husband and I are parents to five adult and teenage children ranging in age from 29 to 14. My husband is a Tucson native, a graduate of the University of Arizona, and a radiologist at the University Medical Center... just a hop, skip, and a jump away from Doolen. Our oldest joins her dad at the medical center as a first-year pediatrician in residency. Our second daughter is a graduate of the UofA, as is her husband, and she is an engineer living in San Diego, where they will soon be parents to our first grandchild this fall! Our third daughter is a nurse living in Colorado, and our youngest daughter and only son are high school students here in Tucson. As for me, I didn’t start off my career in education. After graduating from UCLA, I was working in my field as a Biologist, but it was my children that made me realize that the most important profession – teaching - is the one that leads to all the other professions. A career in education has been fulfilling for me, first as a secondary science teacher, then serving as a high school and middle school administrator. I look forward to the next step in my career at Doolen as I passionately believe that EVERY child can excel. Moreover, the partnership between home and school builds confidence in students to use their skills to shape their future and the future of our community and our nation.

I am committed to always exploring new ways to meet the needs of all students and to effectively communicate with parents and community members. We will be meeting with parents, students, and staff throughout the year to identify specific goals in the areas of student achievement, school climate, and parent communication.

One big change this year, for the safety and security of our students and to ensure maximum engagement in learning is that we are implementing a no cell phone/personal electronics rule at the school. Students can keep their phones in their bags “away for the day” and use it before and after school. Don’t worry – all students have their Chromebooks and will be connected! It is going to be a fun year learning together!

In closing, please know that my door is always open for you. I heartily welcome your conversation and positive input throughout this year. Let us always keep our students the primary focus of our work and conversation. I look forward to celebrating our collective successes during the 2022-2023 school year.

Respectfully,

Ms. Nathaly Santin
Interim Principal
Doolen Middle School
